You wakeup in the morning around the same time every day. But you don’t wake up with the help of the alarm clock. Instead you depend on the rising of thesun to get you out of bed. Say you have a few too many drinks the night before, the sunlight just might not do it for you, so you wait for the crowing of the rooster. After you get out of bed, you need to make some breakfast, so you go out to the barn and milk the cow so you can get some milk. You make some porridge with the milk, and you like it.Off to work you go. What are you going to drive today? Are you going to take the black horse or the carriage with the Clydesdales? You decide on the black horse, so you check the horse shoes and give him some food, saddle up and go on your way. On the way to work you cross a few streams and go through some fields. These are no roads yet, only trails and a few stone bridges. The ride to work takes you through the countryside and into a village that sits in a valley below a gigantic castle. You are the blacksmith. You make swords for the King and his men. They don’t pay much, but you also make stuff for the villagers. Horseshoes are the most common things that you make. Slaving over a hot fire and lots of iron, you master your skill. You are the best blacksmith in the whole town, and nobody can make a sword like yours. You have been trained with a sword since you were a little boy. When you were a little boy all you did was play with the swords that your father made, just like his father before him. Back then; your job was your life, your legacy. People were known for what they did. That is why you became a blacksmith… to follow in the family tradition. Over time you would become just a Smith. That’s how the last names were formed. What you did was who you are.
