Employers Pay Hefty Compensation for Accident Due to Use of Inappropriate Tools

DSV Road Ltd, a company exporting tractors to different nations, had to pay 25,000 pounds to an employee as compensation after he suffered a permanent injury to his right hand while working without using an appropriate tool. The company admitted their liability for the accident and recompensed the worker in an out-of-court settlement after Thompsons Solicitors had initiated legal proceedings against it on behalf of the victim.

Following the payout, a lawyer has called upon the business community to refrain from taking shortcuts and provide adequate working equipment to their employees, even when the business is operating during tight financial times or within strict deadlines.

Tom Offer, 57, from Essex, severed the tendon of his right hand while using a piece of metal with jagged ends to dismantle a tractor. Although he had asked the employers to provide him the type of hammer needed for the job, he was asked to perform the task without the tool because the tractor had to be shipped urgently.

Offer was unaware that a colleague had used the metal piece for dismantling the axle of another tractor, due to which it had developed serrated edges. The rough edges tore through offer’s protective glove while he was using the metal, resulting in a serious injury to his hand.

Offer’s hand was wounded so seriously that he had to undergo a surgery and attend physiotherapy sessions. The injury has inflicted permanent nerve damage to his right hand, due to which it has become numb and cannot put up with cold.

Offer had to take a three months’ rest to recuperate. He is now working as a driver but is worried that he may lose his job due to his handicap and might not find another one in the current market condition.
